Black fleece pocket dress, the Brunhilda.
Black fleece pocket dress, the Brunhilda.
Possibly the most complicated dress I’ve ever made. The Brunhilda dress. This dress is named after an american bison that passed away in Golden Gate park this year. I pass by the bison paddock on my bike commute to the studio and it’s easily one of my favorite parts of the ride. RIP Brunhilda, you taught me so much about how to look good in the cold!
Constructed from a soft substantial fleece and strategic layers of denim and sweater knit…it started as a simple fleece pullover and evolved into a dress as multi dimensional as can be. It is both imaginative and practical, a balance I am always hoping for in my work.
Designed to be incredibly comfortable and warm, there is a hand warmer built into the front of the dress as well as reinforced panes along the front and back. These panels add flattering seams that pull the eyes down, as well as an insulative element to keep you warm.
A dramatic and structured cowl neck gives a dramatic silhouette to the front and the back—constructed from black denim, anti-pill fleece, and a soft and fuzzy sweater knit. This fabric combo makes the neckline warm and insulated, and can be stylized in a number of ways depending on your mood with its long line of snaps. The inside layer of the cowl also closes with snaps and is made from a lightweight hacci sweater knit…super soft and comfortable. A double layer of protection, literal and figurative.
This dress comes with a detachable hood, which attaches along the inside of the cowlneck via 6 discrete black buttons. The hood itself is constructed from fleece, black denim, and sweater knit. A stylized brim on the top/front of the hood can be worn buttoned back or extended forward. Unbuttoned, the brim flap makes this deep hood even more roomy.
Two circular cargo pockets are sewn into the front with a double stitch for durability. Pocket tops are finished with folded sweater knit, and are big enough to carry a considerable amount of goodies.
This dress is finished with extra long sleeves with denim elbow patches and soft sweatery cuffs. Complete with thumbholes of course, ad the inside of the cuffs are lined with warm fleece.
The bottom hem of this dress is in a low/high scallop shape—shorter on the sides and longer in the front/back. It is cut to have motion and swing, without a lot of extra bulk. The reinforced panel that extends down the front and back of the dress also lends a textural element to the hemline that I love. It shapes the skirt and adds extra motion to your strut.
